All About Our Intern

The Video Department at JamesDugan expanded to incorporate an internship this summer and couldn’t be happier with our temporary addition! Meet Sam, our Video Editing Assistant Intern!

Q. What are you going to school for?

A. I’m a third year student at MSUM (Minnesota State University Moorhead) for Film Production.

Q. What got you interested in Video Editing and Production?

A. Growing up, I always loved movies and TV shows but I never thought about trying to do it myself. Towards the end of high school, my friends and I had a lot of fun working together on a couple video assignments from various classes. One of those friends was considering MSUM for their film program and told me that I should check it out too and here I am today. He ended up going to a different school so I’m lucky to know they had a film program. Let alone to actually be attending there.

Q. What do you like to do in your free time?

A. I like activities and hobbies that I can sink my free time and effort into. Working towards being better at something I love doing is super rewarding; whether it be learning guitar or piano, bowling, playing difficult games like Dota 2 with friends, or helping people with their films at school. I also like to take it easy and watch bad movies on Netflix and spend time with my friends.

Q. What is your goal when you finish school?

A. Originally my dream was to make a living working in film or television out in L.A. I still think that would be amazing to do, but more and more I realized that I would be happier to stay in the Midwest and work in advertising or marketing of some sort. The time I’ve spent here at JamesDugan has cemented that desire since I’ve gotten more of a feel for what it’s like to do video professionally and commercially and not just for fun or for school.

Q. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve gotten to do at JamesDugan, or something interesting the JD video team has taught you?

A. I really enjoy being an assistant editor for Home Ideas. In terms of editing it’s not too different from what I’ve already been doing at school but it’s super cool to be able to help and work on something that will be aired on TV. All of the guys on the team have taught me a lot about the commercial video production process; from concepting, to shooting, editing, and the final distribution. To be specific, I’ve been really interested in all that Ryan has been teaching me about animation and motion graphics. He’s good at explaining everything and has tons of experience in the field.

Q. Advice for anyone interested in the same field?

A. My advice to anyone considering a career in video is just to get out there and get experience. Experience is the most useful thing to have in this field because it’s really valuable to know what you need to do, how to do it, and how to solve any problems that arise. I’m going to school because I felt like I didn’t know a lot about video production and wanted the expertise of the staff and resources the school provides.

Q. What has been your favorite part about your internship so far?

A. My favorite part about the internship so far is probably just the internship itself. Working at JamesDugan has been fantastic for me as everyone is so welcoming and friendly. Being around the video production guys and their wealth of knowledge has benefitted me greatly and has showed me what to expect after I graduate and has prepared me for the future. It’s very fulfilling to finally be doing what I love to do in a professional capacity.

At JamesDugan, we love having the opportunity to help individuals develop new skills or sharpen existing ones and gain experience in what they’re passionate about. For more information on our internships or to apply for an internship opportunity email info@jamesdugan.com today.
